A voter ID card in India is an identity proof for voters which they can use to exercise their right to vote. It is issued by the Election Commission of India to Indian citizens who are eligible to take part in the voting process. It is known by other names such as voter’s card or election card.

Here’s how to apply for a Voter ID Card online

  • Visit the National Voter’s Service Portal (NSVP) website.
  • Fill Form 6 with all the details. This is the Voter ID card online application form.
    Note: Form 6 is also for first time voters and voters who have moved to a different constituency.
  • Submit form.

Here’s how to apply for a Voter ID Card partially online

  • Visit the National Voter’s Service Portal (NSVP) website.
  • Download Form 6 and fill all the details.
  • Submit the form along with a photo and supporting documents at the nearest Election Office by either post or in person.

Here’s how to apply for a Voter ID Card offline

  • Get Form 6 from your nearest State Election Office.
  • Fill the form with all the details.
  • Submit the form at the respective Election Office.

In order to be eligible for an election card, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • You are an Indian citizen.
  • You are at least 18 years of age on the qualifying date i.e. 1st of January of the year of revision of electoral roll.
  • You are a resident of the polling area of the constituency where you want to get enrolled.
  • You are mentally fit.
  • You are not be disqualified from being an elector.

How to verify your Voter ID card?

Once you receive your voter’s card, the next thing to do is to check the authenticity of the card. You can do this either by visiting the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of your state or the nearest state election office.

Steps to verify Voter ID online:

  • Visit the National Voters Services Portal (NVSP) website.
  • Click on “Search your name in electoral roll”.
  • You can either do a Voter ID search by name or by EPIC number.
  • See if you get your name on the website.

In case you find anything suspicious, bring it to the notice of the Chief Electoral Officer immediately.
